A thousand splendid suns

Khaled Husseini is a great story teller with an invisible ability to tie the reader emotionally with the charecters in the story. The thousand splendid suns will definitely make your heart heavy and breath tighten.

The story focuses on life of two Afghanistan womens with different family backgrounds. It also go through hardship of women, child marriage and marital sex. The charecter in the story plots the life of Afghan residents during the war from 1960 - 2005

It starts with 15 years old mariyam, an innocent and anxious girl who lives in Herat with her bitter mother who constantly reminds her that she's an illegitimate child and she's a mistake of her father. In her childhood she never understood anything that her mother spilled but impatiently waited her father to visit them. She worshiped her father and always expect to be accepted and appreciated by him. Very soon when her mother suicide, mariyam realise truths her mother tried to explain.

Laila is the other girl in the story who born in an educated family with a supportive father who encourages her to be independent in her life and serve their country. Khalid also discusses the gender discrimination in families as laila's mother shed tears only for her son's to return safely from the war. Even though laila did everything to please her mother she remained neglected. Her life won't he easy if her father and childhood sweetheart Tariq weren't there ( he's another heart breaking phase of story ). When all her friends dreamed of marriage, laila focused on her studies.

Faith brings mariyam and laila together to fight against all odds, mainly their husband Rasheed ( trust me you'll hate the man once you read the book ). It become more difficult to live in afgan specially for woman's, when Taliban took the governance .
Women's weren't allowed to travel with out any male relatives and in every field from education to health they faced discrimination.

It's written in a way which makes us hard to believe that it's a fictional story.  Trust me at the end you'll feel the pain as maiyam and laila. Their struggles  will Pierce your heart deeply. You'll be unable to control your tears. In the end you'll be mariyam... You'll be laila... And will be satisfied with the sweet bitter end

If you haven't read it yet, don't wait go and grab it. Once you start reading you won't be able put down the book till you finish.
